The New Tea Tree Gully Council

On the 4th of September the students of M10 and M11 were fortunate enough to spend some time at the Tea Tree Gully Council chambers as the culmination to our learning on “Governments”. We were welcomed by Mayor Kevin Knight, who spoke to us in the reception room about the history of the Tea Tree Gully Council and the role and responsibilities of the council and councillors.

We were then lucky enough to be invited into the council chambers and Mayor Knight made one of us an honorary mayor as well as 12 new councillors. He even allowed the new mayors to try on the mayoral chain. The new council then participated in a mock debate as to whether the council should provide a new playground or new footpaths, following the council’s meeting process and procedures.

It was a very eye opening visit for all of us on the roles and responsibilities of the council. We would like to thank Mayor Knight and Tom’s mum Holly for making this visit and all our new learning possible. Here are some shots of our time as part of the Tea Tree Gully Council.

Books Light Up Our World

The theme for this year’s book week is ‘Books Light Up Our World’ and our library was turned into even more of a wonderland of books for this special event.

We had our special time in the library with Mrs Koenig on Tuesday and what a lovely visit it was. We started by sharing some of our thoughts about what this year’s theme was all about and Codey shared a lovely thought with us that

“If you keep reading books, they bring a whole other part to your life”

Then Mrs Koenig shared a special video with us of Aaron Blabey reading his Book Week nominated book, Pig The Pug

After that we were able to spend some time with all of our favourite book week books from years gone by and the added bonus was Mrs Koenig had lots of different torches so we could try lighting up our books in different ways. It was a great chance to enjoy reading in some very special ways.

What does government do?

Today we started our learning around our unit of work about the roles and responsibilities of our different tiers of government. In today’s activity the children were examining the 3 different types of government that we have in South Australia and then sorting different areas of responsibility into the level of government that we thought was appropriate. We definitely had the most trouble with local government – they are in charge of a lot more than we thought they were!

Here we are hard at work with this task.

Junior Singers

Every Thursday we do junior singers. It is for girls and boys. We have two different groups, there is one younger group and one older group. The older group, the choir, goes before the younger group. The younger group goes to year four and under. Year five and up is the older choir group.

Today the junior singers sang at the assembly. We sang “Batman Shimmy” and “There’s A Gumtree Growing on a Hill”.

koala visit

We had a very special visitor at our school and it also had a baby with them. It was dropping poop everywhere so it wasn’t so popular. It was near the units and Mrs V’s room. Here are some pictures. Can you work out what our visitor was?

Name Monsters

In M10 recently we have been making name monsters. We wrote our names on a sheet of bremix paper and cut them out.  Mrs. Knipe used a knife to cut out the spaces in our name and then we got A3 paper and stuck it on the paper. We drew mouths and eyes to create our monsters. Then we coloured in our drawings and outlined them in black pen. Lastly we added extra body parts. We were doing this activity because we were learning about symmetry. In our names there is one line of reflected symmetry.

Here are our monsters – can you pick all of our symmetrical names?

MEGAFAUNA!

In history we have been learning about animals called Megafauna (mega-big)  (fauna-animal)

They were alive around 45,000 years ago.

Some people said that the Aboriginal people killed them all.

Others say that there was a catastrophe, or climate change.

We have been saying to our mums and dads that they are real but they say we are CRAZY!!!!!!!

One of our classmates went to the museum and found proof that we are not crazy. There was a display of megafauna and he brought back some photos to share with us.

Here are the photos and some of us are going to go to the museum in the holidays to check out the display for ourselves!

We Did It!

Since the start of this term, the students in M10 have been working on a communal jigsaw puzzle of Hogwarts School from the Harry Potter series. We only work on this when we have some free time after all our regular tasks so it is a very ongoing activity. This was a very challenging 550 piece puzzle and the students really rose to the challenge. There was much celebration when all our group efforts paid off!

Here’s the finished puzzle.

Being safe near dogs!

The year 3s from M10, M12 and M13 went to a dog visit at the school hall. Ms Kerrie showed us a dog and it was beautiful. The dogs colour was black and white. We learnt that dogs need food, water and toys to live. After the visit we all got dog stickers and safety information.  Three students from each class could pat the dog.

Here are some photos that we took of the visit.

We’re Growing!

IMG_5423This term we have been learning about the conditions needed for plants to grow well. We finished our learning on plants by attempting to germinate some seeds and grow them to the mature plant stage. Here are our thoughts on this growing experiment that we undertook.

“M10 have been growing plants for science and we want to share the experience with you. Firstly we drew a diagram of what we will be doing. So we drew a cup and the seed inside with tissue around it. Then days passed and we got the actual seed and every day we recorded what was happening to our seed. Everyone had fun and a great experience. Thanks for reading.” Codey

“First we got a plastic cup and then we put a tissue in the cup. Then we put the seed in the cup and then we put water in the cup. It was very  fun to do. I Liked watching the plants grow.” Ryan

“First you put two paper towels in the cup. Secondly you can add any kind of seed in the cup. Thirdly put the seed in the plastic cup. Fourthly leave the seed in the plastic cup. Fifthly put a little bit of water in the plastic cup. Sixthly make sure you put a little bit of water in the plastic cup everyday. Eighthly leave it to grow. I had a fun and a great time along the way.” Sara

“Recently in M10 we have been doing a very fun science experiment on growing beans. My plant is the control plant because it grew faster than everybody else’s plant. It was really fun growing plants and I think everybody else had fun. I learnt that some plants need a person to survive.” Seth

  • “First we put in paper towel in the cup.
  • Secondly we wet the paper towel
  • Thirdly we put in the seed.
  • Fourthly we had to let it settle for a few days.
  • Fifthly we had to record the plant.

I had a great time growing my plant.” Harrison.

“When I did a science experiment I learnt that the plants can reproduce and they can have seeds. The plants can have hairy roots too. They can move around when they get bigger. We got to take the plants home and water them and take care of them. I really really like the science experiment we did because we got to take them home.” Patrick

“In science we planted some seeds, we didn’t know what sort of  seeds they were. We worked out how seeds grow   and why did they grow. We had a lot of fun, my seed was up to 2 cm when I took it home and  then when I waited for 10 days and it grew up to 4 cm.” Hamed

“We were learning about seeds in science. This is what we used: Tissue paper, a plastic cup, sunlight, a seed and a marker or texta. This is how we did it: Firstly we each got a plastic cup and wrote our names on it. Then we got 2 tissue papers and we scrunched it and placed them in our plastic cups. Finally we placed the seeds in our plastic cups, gave it some water and placed it somewhere sunny. A few of them are growing heaps but some are getting there. We really enjoyed it and the best thing is we got to take them home and show our parents.” Tanvita

“When I took my plant home I started to water it and in a couple of days it started to grow some more.” Linda

“I had a great time growing our plants we had a lot of fun along the way. Here’s what we did

  • Firstly we put the paper towel in the cup.
  • Secondly we wet the paper towel.
  • Thirdly we put in the seeds.
  • Fourthly we had to let it settle for a few days.
  • Fifthly we had to record about the radicle.
  • Sixthly then we had to wait a few more days.
  • Seventhly then you had to record about the root hairs.
  • Eighthly we had to record more about our plants and water the plants.” Cooper
