Remembrance Day 2015

On the 11th of November at 11:00am, Modbury West School stopped to commemorate Remembrance Day. Previously in the week, we had created poppies and learnt about the significance of these as part of the commemoration. Prior to the assembly we laid our poppies in the garden with the poppies created by all the other students in the school. It was a very special time and allowed the students to think about the sacrifices that have been made.

We also read Laurence Binyon’s poem, “For The Fallen” and discussed the lines which we would hear read at the commemoration ceremony

“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.”

We thought we would share with you some of the images from our poppy laying this morning.

My Favourite Time of Year

Today we shared with the children the song we will be performing at the End of Year Concert. With Mrs Morris’ class, we will be performing is a song called My Favourite Time of The Year by an English band called Florin Street.

We thought that this song was most appropriate given that both classes have been learning about the era in history in which the film clip is set. It also has beautiful lyrics about the positive feelings we all have around this time of the year

We have embedded the YouTube clip here for the children to view and start learning the words. They will also be given lyric sheets to help with this too.

We hope you all enjoy it as we are really looking forward to performing it!

Jumping at SANTOS

Today one of our classmates was a fantastic representative for our school at the Athletics Championships at SANTOS stadium. He not only competed fiercely in his own event of high jump, but also acted as a fill-in for two races above his age division. Congratulations on not only being selected for this prestigious event, but also for being such a great ambassador for our school.

Sports Day

Friday, 18 September was Sports Day this year and we had some fantastic weather to help us enjoy the all the different events. We had spent a lot of time with Mr Heatherington practising our skills and then got to share all this fun with our family and friends who were able to watch on the big day.

As you can see by the photos we had a fantastic time and Mrs Knipe is sure everyone was thoroughly exhausted by the end of the day – she knows that she was!

Koko and Kev: the travel buddies

This week we have Koko the koala and Kev the kiwi visiting with us. These travel buddies are visiting schools all around the world and sharing their adventures in each place on their blog: plctravelbuddies.blogspot.com.au The travel buddies started off in the school of a teacher friend of Mrs Knipe’s in Sydney and so far have travelled around Australia and then have visited schools New Zealand, Malaysia and England. We enjoyed reading about all their adventures, though we were a little jealous of the school in Malaysia that had a huge swimming pool as part of their grounds! This is a great chance for us to practice all of our cybersafety and digital citizenship skills for a real audience and we are having a great time writing up information about what our school days are like at Modbury West and sharing some of the highlights of our school via photos.

Here is a photo of all of us with Kev and Koko and we will share some more information about what we have been up to with you soon.

The New Tea Tree Gully Council

On the 4th of September the students of M10 and M11 were fortunate enough to spend some time at the Tea Tree Gully Council chambers as the culmination to our learning on “Governments”. We were welcomed by Mayor Kevin Knight, who spoke to us in the reception room about the history of the Tea Tree Gully Council and the role and responsibilities of the council and councillors.

We were then lucky enough to be invited into the council chambers and Mayor Knight made one of us an honorary mayor as well as 12 new councillors. He even allowed the new mayors to try on the mayoral chain. The new council then participated in a mock debate as to whether the council should provide a new playground or new footpaths, following the council’s meeting process and procedures.

It was a very eye opening visit for all of us on the roles and responsibilities of the council. We would like to thank Mayor Knight and Tom’s mum Holly for making this visit and all our new learning possible. Here are some shots of our time as part of the Tea Tree Gully Council.

We did it!!!

Today was a day of celebration in our classroom. Mrs Knipe set the challenge that if everyone in the class finished the Premier’s Reading Challenge before the deadline we would have a celebration afternoon. Not only did we finish the challenge well ahead of time – we were also the first primary class to be completely finished!!

So today we celebrated. Everyone brought along comfy clothes, snuggly blankets and soft toys and we took over the library for the afternoon. The library was already fantastically decked out for book week and Mrs Koenig and Mrs White said we could use the torches to read our books in a really special way. The highlights of the afternoon were reading some old favourite stories (there is a great video of some of us reading Where is the Green Sheep), getting recommendations from friends about new books we might like to try and of course Mrs Knipe’s treat of hot chocolate and marshmallows.

Here are some photos of us having fun reading at our well-earned celebrations

Books Light Up Our World

The theme for this year’s book week is ‘Books Light Up Our World’ and our library was turned into even more of a wonderland of books for this special event.

We had our special time in the library with Mrs Koenig on Tuesday and what a lovely visit it was. We started by sharing some of our thoughts about what this year’s theme was all about and Codey shared a lovely thought with us that

“If you keep reading books, they bring a whole other part to your life”

Then Mrs Koenig shared a special video with us of Aaron Blabey reading his Book Week nominated book, Pig The Pug

After that we were able to spend some time with all of our favourite book week books from years gone by and the added bonus was Mrs Koenig had lots of different torches so we could try lighting up our books in different ways. It was a great chance to enjoy reading in some very special ways.
